Mishmash

Like so many mid (except there are only 3 weeks 'til school starts... gah!) summer weeks, this past one was a mishmash of activity, indoor amusements (H-O-T in CO), and pre-return-to-school neuroses:

Kid: Will I get the teacher I want?
Me: Let's see... there are 2 teachers in your grade this year so I guess you have a 50-50 chance!

Kid: What should I wear on the first day?
Me: I recommend pants... yes, going pantsless to school on the first day would set the wrong tone for sure...

Kid: But my hair is all weird, what will I do?
Me: Yes, your hair is weird. Live with it, I guess?? Wash it, maybe? Start a hat collection??

Kid: You know how I said all summer that I just wanted to hang out here in town? Well now I wish we would have gone all over the place doing exciting things I can brag to my friends about!
Me: Hmmmm (grrrr) so what you're saying is that although I have a hard time getting you to get in the car to drive across town now you want to drive across the country? Now that we have all of 3 "in-a-row" days available between now and the start of school without commitments you want us to go away for a week?? Note to self: Next year, plan a vacation whether they want it or not. This year, take them up to the mountains for a few days which is probably all they want anyway...

Kid: Hey, it's midday on Saturday near the start of school - let's go to Target to buy school supplies!
Me: Hell no. If I wanted that kind of chaos I would have gone to opening day at Ikea!

Kid: Love you, Mom.
Me: Love you too, Kid.

I spent plenty of summer vacations chilling at home and although they didn't sound quite as sexy as my friends' tales of exotic locales, I have to admit those summers contain some of my favorite memories. It is, however, time for another mountain adventure (it's been 2 weeks after all!).

As I ponder the degree to which I have screwed up my children, enjoy this great read. I think what it's saying is that I'm awesome... or maybe I'm overindulgent and crippling my children.... or maybe I'm what's wrong with humanity... or maybe I just need to go back to bed for an hour or so...

There's a big decision ahead. Do we drop DVD service from Netflix? Those buggers increased their prices as of sometime in September. Nevermind that they're still SO MUCH CHEAPER than cable (of course, for some reason, we still have cable, too). Bless you, Jason Alexander, for understanding our plight. Please give.

The cupboards are bare. I need to go grocery shopping. The dearth of salt and vinegar chips is sending my middle kid into a deep depression (or you know... deep whine). A list is in the works and it looks like I'll be making a trip to Whole Foods. You can bet I'll be singing this in my head the whole time.

Happy Monday!
