"It's boring but at least it sounds good."

That's R's summary of the finale of our musical weekend.

C's youth orchestra played absolutely beautifully at their concert yesterday on the "big stage" at the university. As someone whose previous experience with classical music was pretty much limited to The Four Seasons and a rather pathetic performance of Ode to Joy at the tail end of my (very short) piano career, this whole symphony thing has been a crash course (and I still avoid talking about music other than "ooh purty!" just in case I might find myself talking to some kind of professor of music or something without knowing it). And now, I'm ready to admit it... in their finest hour, their least-impaired performance, their best hair day, Led Zeppelin's got nothing on Rimsky-Korsakov. That Capriccio Espagnol is some good shit.

R and A were impressed in their own special "it ain't Futurama" kind of way.

Earlier in the weekend, C and her conductor played some drum duets by Michael Colgrass at a gala fundraiser for a local chamber group and they blew the roof off the place. It was awesome. I have no idea how this kid who can't seem to grasp how to tie her shoes in any way other than "bunny ears" can be so incredibly coordinated, confident, and skilled. Music really does transform her.

It's one of the best things about being a parent - watching our kids extend far beyond ourselves. I can't begin to imagine what's ahead but I'm really looking forward to going along for the ride.

Does anyone have connections at the Schulich School of Music? UNT? Oberlin? The Grammy Foundation? If so, I love you best! Really, I always have :)
