Friggin' Anticipation!

Perhaps it's just me.

Do you find that every moment between Thanksgiving and the post-Christmas return to school is one big "it's almost ______!"?

Mind you, C, R, and A aren't particularly good with anticipation. C stresses, R bounces off the walls, A decorates. I, well... I sigh. K takes off work as few days as possible. Don't ever doubt how smart he is.

It bugs me to no end that school seems to play into the hype. "It's almost Thanksgiving break!!" there fore we're going to study Native Americans and pilgrims until we're all blue in the face. "4 Days until Winter Break!!" "3 Days until Winter Break!" "2 Days until Winter Break!" and so on and so on with each declaration amply punctuated with sweets and souvenir pencils. Yes, I know I sound like a wet blanket. Around all that excitement, my kids need something to douse the fire or they would never eat, sleep, or concentrate.

Now, we're into the last day of the "X days until school starts" countdown. I've enjoyed having some family togetherness, I really have. I'm not sad that they're going back to school but I can't help thinking we wished the break away.

Today will be spent on backpack cleaning and organizing, a little room tidying to be sure we don't greet the school day tomorrow with mismatched shoes and ill-fitting underwear, a haircut for C, dentist appointments for all 3, and most likely, a pre-bed toast between K and me for (surviving) enjoying the break and talking about how the next big school break might be improved.

I guess what I'm saying is that I feel a little bit like this:

No time to worry about all of this, however. Tomorrow is, after all, National Bird Day. Then we only have a week to prepare to celebrate National Pharmacists' Day. (Let's face it, many of us owe our holiday survival to a pharmacist. Well, not in 2009 but I haven't ruled it out for 2010!) A week later? National Popcorn Day. I know how to celebrate that one (and luckily it's just two days after Ditch New Year's Resolutions Day... double butter anyone?).
