As I avoid a couple of work tasks (chill out, Ernie, I'm finishing my tea first) and a much-needed vacuuming of the popcorn-afflicted TV room/office, I got to thinking about what a funny place K and my chosen hometown for our children really is. Here's the hard part - I love most of what this place stands for - cycling, locally owned shops and restaurants, open space, kid-friendly everything, historical preservation -- I even partake in our really unfairly good selection of microbrewed beer on occasion. But seriously, how can you not laugh at the "WE'RE LOW KEY HIPSTERS!!!" message that pervades a couple of square miles known as Old Town. I realize this statement may reduce the number of social invitations I get from our Old Town friends to something below the current 0.09% but I can live with those odds. When a girl's got to snark, a girl's got to snark.
I appreciate the restaurants (the good ones: Rainbow, Los Tarascos, Coopersmiths - which i'm actually not that fond of but K and the kids adore, Avo's, Suehiro, Olive Street Bakery, Tasty Harmony - shout out to my mama... roughage in da house!). Despite my caffeine averse nervous system I sometimes throw caution to the wind and enjoy Starry Night, Mugs, and Bean Cycle. I avoid anything touted as a "concept restaurant" or anywhere that sells tiny food for huge prices. I think it's funny that there are as many yoga studios as anything else (as evidenced by a really ridiculous proportion of Old Town mamas with bangin' bods - good on ya, by the way... gots to work off all that Fat Tire and handcrafted cheese somehow!). I've got nothing snarky to say about the Lyric - I'm thrilled to have an independent theatre in town even if the sound sucks. I had all these clever things I wanted to say about New Belgium Brewery (but I was afraid I would be tarred and feathered by the hipster goons) but it seems they beat me to the punch with this:
Touche, New Belgium, touche!
O'dell's still makes better beer, though.
