You know when you're trying to find the words to let your kids (and yourself) know that there is life beyond today? I don't think I'm alone in that. Of all the things I fear for my children (and, let's face it, this world and all of its abundant dangers and distractions - chemical, sexual, material - give us plenty to fear), I fear a lack of inspiration for them. Despite ready access to so much information, I worry about how blasé we all are about how truly amazing some things are.
I sometimes struggle to find the words to show my kids what it means to pursue a dream, work hard, and strive for something greater than what is demanded and expected of them every day. On my daily trip through kirtsy.com's most popular sites, I found this great set of inspirational YouTube videos. Some of them I had seen before (Randy Pausch's last lecture... genius, heartbreaking, and oh so inspirational) and some not but it was a great collection nonetheless.
I would add to that, JK Rowling's Harvard commencement speech.
I also love Will Smith's feelings about running and reading.
I suppose the best way to inspire my kids is to stay inspired myself. I'm working on it.
