So, thanks to Netflix and a fair bit of hiding out lately, I have some new-to-me movies to review:
Revolutionary Road - Ah, Kate and Leo, you sure know how to make a feel-good movie, don't you? (please note sarcasm...) I'm sure many would call this "great cinema" but I call it freakin' depressing! It's a story about a couple with 2 children who are unhappy in their suburban lives because they always thought they would "do something amazing" with their lives. Generally, this is a theme I can get something out of. In this incarnation, however, it was just a sad, self-important tale ending in a graphic suicide. Definitely not what I needed this weekend.
Madeline - I love Frances McDormand and I love this movie. I'm still trying to convince A to dress up as Madeline for Halloween. I'm going to guess I won't win that battle.
Yes Man - A good one. Nothing great but certainly worth the 2 hours.
Band Slam - Despite my low expectations, this was a great movie. Gaelan Connell was amazing as the somewhat nerdy and incredibly musically-knowledgable Will. Even Vanessa Hudgens didn't make me roll my eyes. In fact, she was pretty darn good. The main story line doesn't drift too far from the expected but everyone's back story is what elevates the movie to "great" status.
Boy in the Striped Pajamas - I made it through the first 30 minutes and then realized I was sure to end up in the "ugly cry" - I'll have to put that one off until I'm a little more ready for the content.
Next in the Queue (that's such a weird word) - I Love You, Man! I can't wait...
Yikes! That's a heavy movie load. I think you should have skipped it all and gone right for the "I love you, man". I'm also a big fan of anything British (as you already know). They can make you laugh and cry and snort stuff out of your nose all in one swoop. Gotta love that. Haven't seen any good movies lately but I am rather fond of Warehouse 13 on SYFY ANDDDDD Doctor Who is on SYFY too!!!!!! Oh, yes, S and I found it on Friday's!!
ReplyDeleteI think I'll soak myself in British humor (and stout) one of these weekends! I'll check out Warehouse 13, too. I'm not much of a Dr. Who fan (K's territory) - I hope you'll forgive me that one flaw...
