One down. Two to go.

We were greeted with sunny, crisp, fall-like weather this first-day-of-middle-school morning. C popped out of bed and got ready in record time. The supplies are packed, the lunch is made, the nerves have been replaced by impatience and enthusiasm.

I'll meet her around the corner from her bus stop after school. I can't wait to hear about her day.

We'll be spending a good bit of today sharpening pencils and gathering last-minute supplies from around the house for R and A. They start school on Wednesday.

To all of my "mommy friends" navigating the same milestone today - hugs to you! I so vividly remember sharing the first day of kindergarten with so many of you. Despite any misgivings we had on that day, it seems all of those adorable snot-nosed 5-year-olds have grown to be mature(ish), capable (and still adorable but don't you dare call them that!) 11-year olds. Pats on the back all around, mamas!

  1. Wow, school starting already. For us up in the great white north school starts the Tuesday after labour day and in this case it is September 8th. I just received in the mail my school info package today so I know it is soon, but don't want to push it. This coming Friday is opening day of the Canadian National Exhibition or as known here 'The Ex'. And when that starts then you know summer is winding down as is runs till Labour Day. Our weather this summer has been crazy, very wet and cold for July and now we have smog and high heat warnings it is close to 100 degrees outside right now. We usually get this weather in July and then start to cool down in August. Enjoy your time to yourself and getting back into a routine of early mornings, making take to school lunches and homework! I can wait another few weeks for all that!

  2. It has been a shock to the system to get back to the routine. I don't really understand why we go back to school so early in Colorado - most of our schools are not air conditioned and stay quite hot through mid-September (although it has been an incredibly cool, wet summer here). Enjoy the last of your summer break and The Ex!

  3. I am thinking we ALL need to attend the school board meetings and start petitioning for a post-labor day start to the school year! I don't think starting before Labor Day makes any sense - my tomatoes are just starting to ripen! And, if I am going to be truly committed to growing a portion of our food (a very very small portion) I need my children home to help harvest!!! Not to mention- late summer/fall is my favortie time of year and I want to play - not pack lunches and attend weekend soccer games! By the way, I was a little sad (and nervous - it's a tricky bike route) for the first day of middle school!

  4. Hi Sam!

Me too! C's taking the bus because it's just too dangerous to cross the street by Safeway.

Once you get settled in to the year, let's have coffee (better block out the whole day.....)
