Harry, Horses, and Hollyhocks!

What is it about Hollyhocks? They make me feel like I have a "for reals" flower garden. It seems utterly impossible for something so tall and stout to grow in one season. They make me want to call my house a "cottage."

K and the kids went to see the latest Harry Potter movie on opening day. They proclaimed it to be wonderful. I am one of those strange people who has yet to finish all of the books (a Twilight obsession mid-year thwarted my Harry Potter plans) and who has seen only one of the movies (and I'm not sure which one it was). So, instead of ruin their experience at the movie with incessant questions, I opted to do the grocery shopping, pay bills, and watch So You Think You Can Dance (because there's no Deadliest Catch on Wednesday night - pity, really).

I have a weekend of garden chores (oy! the weeds), harvesting (lettuce anyone?), and planning for an upcoming (but we're not sure when) camping trip. I hope your weekend goes well, too.

PS for B in Oregon: We hear things are looking up for you - hurray!!

  1. Thanks for the PS! I've been laying low, but the good news is that I am now vertical whenever I want to be and mobile, so it all seemed worth it. Four more weeks of rehab and the doc will pronounced me cured. The biggest problem now is that I have to think about going back to work... bummer.

I'm jealous of K and the kids as I am wanting to see the latest HP movie myself, but I don't see me sitting for that long in one spot. Good to see your summer is going well.

PS. I love Deadliest Catch too... though I can't figure out why. HA

  2. Glad to hear you're doing better! I can't figure out the appeal of Deadliest Catch, either -- I don't think I have a thing for chain-smoking Norwegians but I guess I might be suppressing some kind of latent tendency... K _is_ Norwegian but I don't think he's ever smoked a cigarette, captained a boat, or bitten the head off of a herring.....

Sorry about the return to work - but happy for you and A+W just the same.

  3. As I have come to realize OGD we are two peas in a pod. I have a thing for holly hocks but so far I just can’t seem to get them to grow more then 4 inches :(
I as well am not much of a HP fan I did read the first three books cause at the time the teenager was reading them and I wanted to know what all the fuss was about. I did see the first movie but fell asleep half way through it. Sunshine, one of my blogger buds at http://conversationsatthepark.blogspot.com/ saw the movie last night and blogged about it today. You can read her review.
I would love some of your lettuce as I realized today when pulling weeds in the garden that it wasn't dandelion leaves but lettuce leaves I was pulling up. Next year I will pay more attention to where the little one plants the seeds.
Hope you have fun camping, we are of to help out at a children’s camp for a week which I have decided it like going out on the mission field.
Have a good week, and hopefully the sun will shine in your world cause it sure doesn’t want to in ours this summer.

  4. Hey, I've got Hollyhocks too! Go figure. My friend Stacy isn't the hugest fan of them so she gave hers to me and now I have prize winning black hollyhocks growing in the far corner! They are soooo lovely. We have black walnut trees in the back and luckily the hollyhocks are one of the 3 plants that thrive around the walnuts. Phew. Your's are a lovely shade and quite happy looking - though I think I was eyeing up the horse more...

Nice pic of R.! Still haven't taken Sam to see the HP movie yet but I can hardly wait!

  5. I LOVE black Hollyhocks. Send pics!!

I need to start some from seed next spring. The plants are so ridiculously expensive at the nursery.

I have one black walnut but it's over the little shed so I don't mind nothing thriving underneath!
