This is parent-teacher conference week at the younger kids' school. Not only do I get some feedback from teachers regarding my genius (?!) children, I get them home for 2 extra days (Thurs and Fri - conference "comp" days for the teachers). K has some exciting to-be-divulged-at-a-later-date plans for himself and R (I know... you can hardly wait...). I have an entire day alone with A on Thursday (C has Friday off, though) so I'm working on some fun plans - perhaps a trip to get our hair and nails done...
We're finding that as much as we enjoy and need to plan family time, the kids really benefit from one-on-one time with each of us.
On another note, do you have one of those friends who always seems to have a cause or concern she is working on? There are those who can be annoying - "buy a friendship bracelet and $0.13 will go towards world hunger" or "give $150 to the PTO and there will be a real-live clown at the school carnival" and then there are those people who are truly, honestly, earnestly concerned and trying to make a difference.
Our school system recently switched from junior high to middle school and in the process, many of the "specials" (PE, art, music, drama, home ec) got eliminated or so dramatically reduced in time that they are essentially gutted. As a mom whose daughter adores middle school because of (and chooses to devote her one elective period to) band, I am especially concerned about preserving music in schools.
So, thanks to my friend Becky, here are some links to information regarding the importance of P.E., music, and "specials" in general. I'm not sure there is a solution other than paying for and driving to yet another set of after-school activities but I hope there is.
