Shovel-Gate

All the while I was assuming A had some sinister plan for her tiny shovel. I imagined she and her little girlfriends plotting a live burial of one of the pesky boys at school. Trust me, if you knew A the thought would have crossed your mind, too.

In the end, it was something far less dramatic. A came home last night and returned the shovel. She smirked and told me she wouldn't be needing it anymore. I asked her if the shovel had completed its mission. She looked right into my eyes and said, "I really can't believe you didn't figure it out, Mom. Next Halloween, everybody at my school will thank me." She then proceeded to get the little container of pumpkin seeds that she had requested in her lunch. About half of them were gone. Turns out she and her friends had been digging holes and planting pumpkin seeds in anticipation of a grand pumpkin harvest next Halloween.

Bless her heart. Too bad they were roasted, salted, and shelled. I didn't have the heart to tell her. I'll explain it to her before Halloween rolls around next year but I want her to enjoy that sense of self-satisfaction for a little longer.

  1. Wouldn't it be cool if someone snuck out there next spring and planted some seeds and then next Halloween pumpkins "magically" appeared? Hmm... I wonder who that someone could be...

  2. Hmmm... Such a good idea. It's one that would likely be thwarted by the dry weather over the summer but I'll have to think about it. If nothing else, it might be time to plan that pumpkin patch at home....
