So, I decided I was too lazy to make Callaloo (plus Safeway was out of at least 3 important ingredients), so I made curried sweet potato soup instead. It was fabulous! Here's the recipe with the disclaimer that I tend to be a stream-of-consciousness kind of cook so things are always inexact.1 yellow onion, chopped
2T oil
2 large sweet potatoes, roughly chopped (I think I actually used yams but I swear I can't tell the difference)
1-2 t curry powder
8(ish) cups of water
2 Knorr vege broth cubes (designed to make 4c of broth)
Saute the onion in the oil until translucent. Add the curry powder and stir to coat the onions. Add the sweet potatoes and stir. Add water and broth cubes. Bring to slow boil and cook until sweet potatoes are tender. Puree. Eat. Eat some more. Watch as husband happily eats sweet potatoes (and attempt not to look shocked).
Raw Meat: Poppy has been having itchy spots lately. I bathe her in oatmeal shampoo and feed her a relatively high quality kibble but she still has dandruff and is quite the accomplished butt-scratcher. After a bit of research, I've decided to try the B.A.R.F. diet for her. This may seem pretty funny given that the humans in the house are 99% vegetarian but I don't find the Nature's Variety chicken medallions any more disgusting than any kind of canned pet food. It's expensive stuff but Poppy's only weighs 7 lbs so it's not likely to have much impact on the kids' tuition funds.
I'll let you know how it goes. We're transitioning her gradually to (hopefully) avoid too much gastric upset. Supposedly once we're all done with the transition and she's sufficiently "cleaned out" she'll poop little white pellets. We'll see about that one!
Today: Lunch (second breakfast, actually) with a friend, making enchiladas for dinner and bean burritos for the freezer (using USDA "bean trial" pinto beans I got as a gift from a friend... for reals), and maybe (just maybe) cleaning the bathrooms. Oh yeah, and a bit of work. I'd better get off the computer and get going.
We've got the itching and scratching here too - as you well know - I've heard it's allergies. I've got Putty on 1/2 a Benadryl 2x a day and eating non-allergenic dog food (seriously). It's Fish and Sweet Potato. I'm a sucker - it's not cheap. It's called Nature's Balance. You have to buy it at a trendy pet store. It's ridiculous how much I love this dog. Even my kids don't get organic everything - yet my dog does? Go figure?! Let me know how the new diet goes.
ReplyDeleteYeah, seriously! I think R ate 3 cheese sticks and some toast for dinner last night and Poppy had turkey, pumpkin, and goose liver.
ReplyDeleteBut then again, R doesn't look at me adoringly just for scratching him behind the ears and he's not nearly as obedient ;-)
I'm completely dog-smitten, too. I might become that crazy(er) dog lady...
